10 Things I Learned From Richard Quick

Yesterday we dropped, “Excellence by Richard Quick”. It is the 12th ASCA talk that we have brought back to life. And boy was it a doozy.

If you didn’t listen to it yet…Listen here on Apple Podcasts.

Richard drove across the country to see Doc Counsilman speak at a coaching clinic. Here is what Doc had to say about playing golf…

“My philosophy on recruiting has been shaped by the wisdom of legendary coach Peter Daland. He emphasized high goals both athletically and academically. He was looking for people he liked that he wanted to spend time with…”

All dreams start somewhere, and it is up to us, the coaches, to help make those dreams become achievable goals.

100% wrong or 0% right? Get it in your head: if you are 99% right, you are still 100% wrong.

Goals aren’t just hopes and wishes, they’re things we’re absolutely going to do! Set a belief system based on your goals and let it change the way you live.

“Strength per pound body weight and muscle endurance is what you are looking for in training.”

Richard shares the story of Keena Rothhammer (Olympic Champ in the 800 Free in 1972) leaving his team to join George Haines in Santa Clara. Moral of the story? Focus on your current athletes and continue leading with enthusiasm!

Recovery days are not easy days. They are not sloppy days. It is not a sloppy workout.

You know who else this sounds like? Eddie Reese.

“You do not have to miss out on your family to be a great coach.”
