🏊‍♀️FAST SWIMS AROUND THE WORLD 🌎

AP Race International

Adam Peaty’s inaugural swim meet was held at the London Aquatic Center over the weekend. It’s meant to bring age group and professional swimmers together. Handing out autographs were AP, Chad Le Clos, and our best friend, Sonny Trigg.

Looks like Seths enjoyed meeting his Olympic hero, getting his signature tattooed on his arm.

Peaty was there looking fit with a trendy little stache, but didn’t compete. Here were the most impressive swims of the meet:

  • Anna Hopkin got the best of Catie DeLoff in the splash and dash 24.84 vs. 24.87. Catie returned the favor in the 100 (54.04 vs. 54.33).

  • Arno Kamminga and Lucas Matzerath traded wins in the 50 and 100 Breaststrokes. Matzerath becomes the 2nd fastest German ever by going 59.09 in Prelims. Arno also won the 2 Breast in 2:09.34.

  • The Netherlands Tes Schouten won the 100 (1:05.93) and 200 Breaststrokes (2:23.49 in Prelims). She beat out a fast breaststroke contingent including Lara van Niekerk, Sophie Hansson, and Sydney Pickrem.

  • The Wiffin twins went 1-2 in the 1500. Daniel just dipping under 15 (14:57) to Nathan’s 15:45. Dan Wiffin also blasted a 7:47.52 in the 800, the only competitor sub 8 minutes.

  • Chad Le Clos won the 100 Fly in 52.05

  • Paige Madden looks to be back in shape posting wins in the 200 Free (1:57.62) and 400 Free (4:08).

  • Felix Auboeck took down Dan Wiffin in the 400 Free taking the victory in 3:48.41

  • One of Sonny’s swimmers, Fritz Dietz, won the 50 Back in 26.13 so he got to go sign autographs afterwards.

  • Tom Dean took the Men’s 200 IM in 1:58.00 and the 200 Free in 1:46.09.

  • Ondrej Gemov of the Czech Republic, posted a 1:57.20 200 Fly victory

  • Matt Richards (48.17) beat Tom Dean (48.35) and Dylan Carter (48.65) to the wall in the 100 Free. Richards was 2nd in the 200 behind the Olympic Champ in 1:46.73.

  • Dylan Carter took the 50 Fly in 23.21

  • Louise Hansson blew away the field in the 100 Fly with a 57.96

  • Perhaps the swim of the meet on the women’s side was Sydney Pickrem’s 2:08.89 200 IM. That’s just shy of her 2:08.6 from March - good for 4th in the world this year.

Glasgow International Swim Meet

The 2023 City of Glasgow International was being held the same time as the AP meet, stealing away from of GBR’s stars like Duncan Scott.

  • Kara Hanlon (31.03/1:06.36/2:26.75 and Mona McSharry (31.22/1:06.15/2:24.50) went back and forth in the breaststrokes. Hanlon’s 1:06.36 is a new Scottish Record.

  • Duncan Scott won the 200 Free (1:47.93), 200 IM (1:59.0), and the 100 Free (49.35). He had to fight off a hard charging Jack McMillan in that 2 Free (1:48.19).

  • Abbie Wood (2:11.22) and Katie Shanahan (2:11.83) battled it out in the 200 IM. Abbie also took the 200 Free in 1:59.06.

  • Laura Stephens did the 200 Fly back-to-back (2 Fly Prelims + 2 Free Prelims). She went 2:10 both times and another 2:10 at night in Finals of the 2 Fly. That’s a great day of race simulation.

  • Medi Harris won the Women’s 100 Back in 59.74

  • James Wilby swept the breaststrokes (27.59/1:00.43/2:11.48).

📰 SWIMMING HEADLINES

Mike Bottom Retires

One of the great coaches of our time, Obi-Wan Kenobi Mike Bottom, has retired from the University of Michigan, just months after signing a 5 year contract extension.

Over three decades of coaching, he has assisted numerous athletes (Gary Hall Jr, Tony Ervin, Nathan Adrian, Milorad Cavic, Duje Draganja) in achieving the highest accolades in swimming: World Records and Olympic medals.

On the team side of things, he has an NCAA Championship (2013) on his resume.

His enthusiastic coaching style and passion for the sport have distinguished him as one of the most respected coaches in the swimming community. His ability to connect and build relationships with people has always been his super power.

In honor of Coach Bottom, here is a playlist of all his drills.

Tracy Slusser Leaves Coaching

Tracy Slusser has decided to step down after 11 years as the associate head coach for the Stanford women's swimming and diving program. Slusser, who has been with Stanford since 2012 and became associate head coach in 2014, contributed significantly to the team's success, including three NCAA championships (2017-19) and seven Pac-12 titles (2013, 2017-20, 2022-23). She played a key role in player development and recruiting.

This is easily one of the best coaching jobs in all of swimming. I’m def applying.
