Day 6 Finals

Women's 100m Butterfly Final:

As has been the norm this week, the first event saw a massive world record set. That's the eleventh one set so far! Canada's Maggie MacNeil blew away the field with her underwaters winning gold πŸ₯‡ in 54.05. Second was Torri Huske from the United States πŸ₯ˆin 54.75 (Fourth fastest performance all-time). Third was Louise Hansson of Sweden πŸ₯‰in an impressive 54.87 (now sixth-fastest all-time).

Men's 100m Butterfly Final:

In the men's 100m Butterfly final, Chad le Clos of South Africa took it out fast and never looked back finishing in 48.59 and securing the πŸ₯‡. That time from le Clos is the second-fastest time in the world this year, only to himself from the October Berlin World-Cup stop (48.58). Second was Ilya Kharun of Canada πŸ₯ˆ in a new World Junior Record of 49.03. Third was German Marius Kusch in 49.12 πŸ₯‰

Women's 50m Breaststroke Final:

After setting the world record in 28.37 in the semi-finals of the women's 50m breaststroke last night, Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte followed through in her dominance winning gold πŸ₯‡ in the second-fastest performance in history in 28.50. Second was Lara van Niekerk of South Africa in a new African Record of 29.09 πŸ₯ˆ and falling slightly behind in third was American Lilly King in 29.11 πŸ₯‰.

Men's 50m Breaststroke Final:

Once again, American Nic Fink wins a breaststroke event and defends his world title in the 50 πŸ₯‡. His time of 25.38 is a new American and Championship Record and tied for the sixth-fastest performance all-time. The 29-year-old went nine-for-nine in the breaststroke events in the FINA World Cup season this year and has only been second once, to Daiya Seto earlier in the 200m distance.

In second was powerhouse Italian Nicolo Martinenghi in 25.42 πŸ₯ˆ. Third was his Italian countrymen Simone Cerasuolo in 25.68 πŸ₯‰.

Noticeably behind was American Michael Andrew in fifth (25.92), Long Course World Record Holder and 🐐 Adam Peaty of Great Britain, and SCM World Record Holder Huseyin Sakci of Turkey finishing eighth in 26.09.

Women's 200m Backstroke Final:

In the women's 200m Backstroke final, Australian World Record holder, Kaylee McKeown, went head to head with American rising superstar, Claire Curzan. At the 150, the two were virtually even with McKeown getting a small lead into each turn. Coming off the walls, Curzan had noticeably stronger underwater that kept her close. In the end, McKeown took the πŸ₯‡ in 1:59.26 (fourth-fastest all-time) - just off her world record of 1:58.94.

Curzan placed second πŸ₯ˆ in 2:00.53 just off Missy Franklin's World Record of 2:00.03 from the Berlin World Cup in 2011. Third was Canada's backstroke superstar, Kylie Masse πŸ₯‰ in 2:01.26.

Men's 200m Backstroke Final:

After winning the 50m and 100m backstroke earlier in the meet, American Captain Ryan Murphy completed the world championship sweep winning the 200m backstroke in 1:47.41 πŸ₯‡. American teammate Shaine Casas, who was undefeated in the 200 back in the world cup series, finished second in 1:48.01 πŸ₯ˆ. Third was Italy's Lorenzo Mora in 1:48.45 πŸ₯‰.

Women's 200m Freestyle Final:

In the women's 200m freestyle final, reigning World Champion and current World Record holder, Siobhan Haughey won πŸ₯‡ in 1:51.65. That time is the fourth-fastest time of the year (she holds the fastest time in 1:51.13). Second was Canada's Rebecca Smith in 1:52.24 πŸ₯ˆ. Third was Marrit Steenbergen of the Netherlands in 1:52.28 πŸ₯‰.

Men's 200m Freestyle Final:

In the men's 200m Freestyle final, Korea's Hwang Sunwoo broke a serious barrier in swimming - the 1:40 mark. 1:40 has been broken four times in history (including tonight). Sunwoo's final time was an Asian and Championship record, 1:39.72 πŸ₯‡. Second was skinny legend, David Popovici of Romania in 1:40.79. Closely behind in third was top seed going into tonight Tom Dean in 1:40.86 πŸ₯‰.

American, Drew Kibler was fourth in 1:41.44, improving on his morning swim of 1:41.88

Women's 4X100m Medley Relay:

Such an impressive relay finish for the women's 4X100m medley relay. As predicted, it would take a world record to swim. In the end, it was Team USA (Claire Curzan - seventh medal of the meet, Lilly King, Torri Huske, and Kate Douglass) taking the πŸ₯‡ and the World Record in 3:44.35. Check out these splits!

Team Australia (Kaylee McKeown, Jenna Strauch, Emma McKeon, and Meg Harris) was close behind in second πŸ₯ˆ which included the fastest 100m butterfly split in history by almost half a second. Emma McKeon split 53.9 - ahead of Dana Vollmer's suited 54.37 from the Duel in the Pool 2009. Australia's time was 3:44.92 - an Oceanic Record.

In third was Team Canada (Ingrid Wilm, Sydney Pickrem, Maggie MacNeil, and Taylor Ruck) in a time of 3:46.22 πŸ₯‰.

Other notable splits were 54.59 100m Butterfly from Maggie MacNeil (CAN), 55.36 lead-off 100m Backstroke from Ingrid Wilm (CAN) - Note: that time would have won the individual 100m Backstroke (55.49 - McKeown). Marrit Steenbergen from the Netherlands split 50.47 on the freestyle leg. Louise Hansson of Sweden split 54.57 in Sweden's Butterfly leg. Australia's Meg Harris split 50.76 on their Freestyle anchor leg.

Men's 4X100m Medley Relay:

A better finish to this World Championship could not have been scripted. Team USA (Ryan Murphy, Nic Fink, Trenton Julian, and Kieran Smith) and Team Australia (Isaac Cooper, Joshua Young, Matt Temple, and King Kyle Chalmers) TIED for πŸ₯‡ in a new World Record time of 3:18.98. Breaking the previous record set by the Russian Federation 13 years ago! See the ridiculous splits below.

In third and also under the previous World Record time was Team Italy (Lorenzo Mora, Nicolo Martinenghi, Matteo Rivolta, and Alessandro Miressi) in a time of 3:19.06 πŸ₯‰ - a European Record.

Notable Splits: Nic Fink's (USA) 54.88 Breaststroke (second man under :55 and second fastest all-time), Kyle Chalmers' (AUS) 44.63 Freestyle (fastest in history), Matt Temple's (AUS) 48.34 Butterfly (seventh-fastest all-time), and Matteo Rivolta's (ITA) 48.50 Butterfly Split.
