Prelims Day 5 Recap

Women's 100 Free

Some big news in this event: Shayna Jack broke her hand in warm ups this morning. She is out! Huge loss for Australia.

Only 4 ladies under 54 this morning. Sarah Sjostrom 53.8 good for 4th. Claire Curzan gets a 2nd swim but well off her relay splits.

Predictions?I think Sarah Sjostrom will ultimately slay this event. Penny Oleksiak is back from the false start in the 200 and has the uncanny ability to get her hand on the wall when it matters.

Men's 200 Back

Shaine Casas is in the water! And, he's your top seed in 1:56.6. Murph comfortable this morning splitting 28.9 on the final 50 getting revved up.

Easy swim for some of these vets like Luke Greenbank. The young versatile Brodie WIlliams will join his fellow Brit into SF's. Hungry also has 2 in the Top 8.

Predictions?I'm calling it now - America 1-2. Murph takes the Finals victory. The United States of Backstroke put their foot down after Thomas Ceccon's World Record.

Women's 200 Breast

I've always been a fan of Canadian Kelsey Wog. She's got a big kick -- like Michael Andrew style big.

Lilly King is up and at 'em. UVA's Kate Douglass is right behind her tied for 4th.

Another Lithuanian breaststroker, Kotryna Teterevkova. Te-te-rev-vkova. That's Teterevkova. Say that 3 times fast. The 2018 European Jr Champ, was 2:22 in February.

Predictions?The Finals, whomever makes it, is going to be close across the board. 2:22 might just win it.

Men's 200 Breast

Nic Fink with the 50 Breast AR yesterday - he's chillin in 9th. Really good morning swim from fellow American Charlie Swanson, in his first World Champs race.

Finals might have a Nordic feel with Olympic Bronze medalist Matti Mattsson (Finland), Icelander Anton McKee, and Sweden's Erik Persson all in position to make it into the finale.

Arno dropped the 50 Breast. But he's sitting in 10th here in 2:10.3.

Predictions?I expect World Record holder Zac Stubblety-Cook to be 1st in Prelims. 1st in Semis. And 1st in Finals.

Women's 4x200 Free Relay

China went 1-3 in the 200 Free last night. They are the Olympic champs and World Record holders led by the Yang-Tang tag team. Yufei Zhang isn't having the best meet and didn't swim Prelims, but I expect they put the Olympic Champ on it tonight. They have a lot of options with 1:56's this AM from Lihui Lao and Yanhan Al. I think the Chinese women will be competitive in this relay for many years to come.

Can Australia take them down? Mollie O and Madi Wilson will be on tonight's relay.

Predictions?Don't think I'm not bullish on Team America. Bella Sims split 1:55 this morning. She's fresh and she will be on this relay.

Have you ever heard of Katie Ledecky? I hear she is pretty good at the 200 Free. I assume she is our anchor.
