πŸŠβ€β™€οΈFAST SWIMS AROUND THE WORLD 🌎

Division I Men's NCAA Championships

We'll be covering this more in-depth in the college round-up tomorrow, but like the women's meet last week, this week was one helluva meet.

Here are the top swims according to SwimCloud's Index:

  • #1: Leon Marchand (ASU): 400 IM: 3:28.82 (NCAA Record)πŸ’₯

  • #2: Leon Marchand (ASU): 200 IM: 1:36.34 (NCAA Record)πŸ’₯

  • #3: Leon Marchand (ASU): 200 Breast: 1:46.91 (NCAA Record) πŸ’₯

  • #4: Destin Lasco (Cal): 200 IM: 1:38.10 (American Record) πŸ”₯

  • #5: Luke Hobson (Texas): 500 Free: 4:07.37 πŸ”₯

  • #6: Luke Hobson (Texas): 200 Free (800 Free Relay Lead-Off): 1:29.63 πŸ”₯

  • #7: Destin Lasco (Cal): 200 Back: 1:35.87 πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

  • #8: Destin Lasco (Cal): 200 IM (p): 1:38.32 πŸ”₯

  • #9: Leon Marchand (ASU): 200 IM (p): 1:38.33 πŸ”₯

  • #10 Brendan Burns (IU): 100 Back: 43.61 πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

How Josh Liendo's 40.2 100 Free isn't on this list makes no sense. I think Swimming Stats has a better Top 10 List:

There's no question about who the swimmer of the meet. Leon Marchand of ASU had perhaps the most impressive meet in the history of the NCAA. 10 Swims in all for Marchand and every single one was beyond exceptional.

Not mentioned in the list above was his πŸ”₯ 22.27 50 Breaststroke Split πŸ”₯ on ASU's second-place medley relay (fastest ever), his πŸ’₯ 1:28.42 200 free anchor split πŸ’₯ on ASU's second-place 800-free relay (far and above the fastest ever), his πŸ’₯ 49.2 100 Breaststroke split πŸ’₯ on ASU's third-place 400 medley relay (fastest ever), and his πŸ”₯ 40.55 100 free split πŸ”₯ on ASU's third-place 400 freestyle relay (one of the fastest ever).

He will be in front of the home crowd come Paris 2024 πŸ’ͺ🏼 and all eyes will be on him.

ASU finished their meet in second place behind Cal and ahead of Texas. ASU's highest finish in program history, Texas' lowest finish in over a decade, and Cal's second back-to-back title win since 1979/1980.

What is this, a Smashing Pumpkins song, Sir Herb?

Chinese Spring Championships Wrap-Up:

In the final days of the Chinese Spring Championships:

  • Zhang Yufei won the women's 100 Fly in 56.58 (World #1 πŸ”₯)

  • Wang Changhao won the men's 100 fly in 51.45 (World #5)

  • Yu Yiting won the women's 400 IM in 4:38.15 (World #4)

  • Zhang Yufei won the women's 50 free in 24.40 (= World #2) over Cheng Yujie (24.57) (World #5) and Wu Qingfeng (24.65) (= World #7)

  •  Wang Changhao won the men's 50 fly in 23.25 (New Chinese Record & World #2)

  • London Olympic Champion, Ye Shiwen, won the women's 200 Breast in 2:24.01 (World #3)

  • Qin Haiyang won the men's 200 breast in 2:07.60 (World #1 πŸ”₯) and the men's 50 breast in 26.77 (26.63 in prelims - New Asian record!) (World #1 πŸ”₯)

  • Zhang Yufei returned to win the women's 50 fly in 25.32 (World #1 πŸ”₯)

  • Chen Juner won the men's 200 fly in 1:54.58 (World #2)

Indianapolis Sectionals (LCM)

It was the Carmel Swimming Show

  • Drew Kibler won all four of his events: 22.23/48.89/1:45.81/3:52.25

  • Aaron Shackell posted times of 1:47.70/3:52.42/8:08.96 -- pretty quick for a high schooler

  • Alex Shackell won all her races: 50 free (25.25), 100 fly (58.43), 200 fly (2:10.90) and 100 free (55.08, 54.87 in prelims) - she also split sub 2:00 on the 800 Free Relay. With the sprint freestyle events still relatively weak in America, Alex has a real chance of making it to Paris

  • Daniel Diehl 53.70/1:56.59 in the backstrokes as well as 53.03 in the 1 Fly & almost broke 2 mins (2:00.18) in the 2 IM. He's got a really good shot at making the Olympic team next year in the 200 Back. Other than Murph, who does he have to beat?

  • 14 year old Kayla Han showed off her aerobic base: 800 free (8:36.60), 400 IM (4:43.80), 400 free (4:11.34) and 1650 free (16:26.92)

  • Molly Sweeney (yes, also from Carmel) won the 100/200 Breaststrokes in 1:08.83/2:28.34 plus the 2 IM (2:13.52).

This week's American Swimming Coaches Association talk comes from Riptide's Amy Parratto

"Coaching for the Long Term Development of Age Groupers"

3 Key Takeaways:

1. Swimmers should compete in one meet every four to five weeks in the short course season and about one meet every two to three weeks in the brief long course season.

2. Coaches should provide swimmers with opportunities to get to know each other, emphasize team and working together, and incorporate fun activities into practice.

3. Swimmers should be encouraged to participate in USS/LSC camps and travel to meets around the country.
