Bruce Gemmell is an Olympic swim coach for Nation's Capital Swim Club (NCAP), USA Swimming's premier club team with 14 locations, 1800+ athletes, and 65+ coaches. Most recently they produced three Olympians: Katie Ledecky (the GOAT), Andrew Gemmell (Bruce's son), and Jack Conger.
Bruce was an OT qualifier himself, swimming at the University of Michigan, where he learned all about energy zones and Jon Urbanchek's famous color system.
In this conversation, Brett asks a lot of questions about training Katie Ledecky and his own son, Andrew, who was training partners with her leading up to the 2016 Rio Games.

Michael Andrew is back. This time, with an Olympic gold medal and World Record representing the stars and stripes. Brett and MA break down each of his 3 individual swims at the Tokyo Olympics and dive face first into being vilified and targeted for choosing to remain unvaccinated.
Remember when Christine Brennan called him a bad, selfish teammate in USA Today? How about when Maya DiRado threw him under the bus on Twitter two days before the start of the Olympics? Would you believe a USA Swimming team manager followed him into the ready room at the Olympics before the Final of the Men's 50 Freestyle? How about USA Swimming asking him to leave Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi?
Brace yourselves for a Michael Andrew tell all...

At the Tokyo Olympics, Ariarne Titmus won the 200 and 400 Freestyles taking down the greatest female Olympic swimmer in history, Katie Ledecky. Or, as she refers to her, "The GOAT".
"I never doubted myself in the race. I 100% thought that I could still win from being behind." - Ariarne Titmus on coming over the top to beat Katie Ledecky in the 400 Free

What makes a champion? What is it like being a World Champion at 15 years old? The level of expectation and pressure leading into the Sydney Olympics. Breaking his ankle 12 months out. Being accused of doping by Germany's Head Coach and then destroying the 200 Free World Record by over a second. Losing the 200 Free to Pieter van den Hoogenband in Sydney. The theory behind Doug Frost's training program. 3000 for time. 30:46 or 30:16? Followed by 30x100's heart rate set. The full length, custom black suit made out of lycra. Adidas. Ripping multiple suits right before the 4x100 Free Relay. Klim breaking the World Record on the lead off. Catching Gary Hall Jr. Having international pop-star status in Japan. Turning down a record deal. Craig Stevens giving up his 400 Free spot in Athens. The Swimming Race of the Century: Michael Phelps vs. Pieter van den Hoogenband, vs. Ian Thorpe. No privacy in training. Making the decision to retire. Wishing Michael Phelps Was A Little Bit Older. Everyone is swimming the 200 Free wrong.

Brett and Bob go through each of his champion characteristics: Champions have a clear plan for success in achieving their goals. Champions produce normal and predictable performances in very abnormal and unpredictable environments. Champions rehearse success on a daily basis -- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Champions value the process of success more than any particular outcome. Champions have a dream. Champions have a passion for pursuing their vision of success that will overcome obstacles, get them through the tough times, and carry them to spectacular performances throughout their career.

Dean Boxall is the Head Coach of St. Peters Western Swimming Club in Brisbane, Australia. His swimmers include Ariarne Titmus, Elijah Winnington, Meg Harris, Mollie O'Callaghan, Abbey Harkin, and more.
Ariarne did the impossible by defeating Katie Ledecky in the 400 Freestyle in the most hyped up race of the Tokyo Olympics.
"You're trying to beat Katie. There's no cheap gold medals but Katie adds a different value. We pursued that and it was an honor. It was an honor to plan and to talk about it and to dream about it." - Dean Boxall
